Information for Sick Passengers

I. Who we serve:

We are committed to providing the necessary services to sick passengers with Fit-to-Fly certificates issued by certified medical institutions.

II. Applicable Routes:

1. The service is only applicable to flights operated by China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines with China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines flight numbers.

2. The following conditions must be met for connecting flights:

(a) The actual carriers throughout the journey are China Eastern Airlines (MU) and Shanghai Airlines (FM) and the transfer takes place on the same day;

(b) The connecting flight consists of only two flight segments;

(c) The transfer takes place at a major hub terminal (Pudong, Hongqiao, Kunming, Xi'an), and the minimum connection time is not shorter than the transfer time limit of any airport.

VI. Requirements for the Certificate of Diagnosis:

1. Issued by a doctor from a Level II A hospital or higher (including Level II A hospitals in China and equivalent clinics, medical centers, and hospitals abroad) and stamped with the official seal of the medical institution;

2. Issued and signed by a doctor, if the doctor works in an overseas hospital or clinic.

3. In addition to another certificate of diagnosis issued within 48 hours before the flight is scheduled to take off.

VIII. Other Requirements:

This service is offered by China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines for sick passengers who would like to travel by air. Oxygen and pressure in high-altitude environments differ from those at ground level. Air travel is not recommended for people belonging to the groups listed below:

1. Individuals suffering from an infectious disease that poses a threat to the health of other passengers or crew members, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndromes (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which can spread in the cabin with serious negative consequences. Although illnesses like the common cold can also spread easily in an airplane cabin, they do not affect the health of others as seriously and are not considered threats in the same way, as with AIDS and other serious illnesses that do not spread easily in an airplane cabin;

2. Patients for who air travel may pose a health risk due to having recently undergone a surgical procedure;

3. Patients with mental conditions who are experiencing an episode that may cause danger or harm to themselves or other passengers, or endanger aviation safety;

4. Patients with any serious or critical heart conditions, including those who have recently had a serious cardiac failure, cyanosis, or myocardial infarction (within 6 weeks of their planned trip);

5. Patients suffering from serious ear infections, accompanied by ear and throat blockages;

6. Patients suffering from a recent spontaneous collapsed lung, or patients with neurological disorders who have recently undergone surgery for a collapsed lung;

7. Patients suffering from large mediastinum tumors, severe swelling of the hernia, and ileus;

8. Patients suffering from head injury, intracranial hypertension, and skull fracture;

9. Patients with mandibular fractures who have received osteosynthesis with metal wire;

10. Patients who have suffered from polio or bulbospinal polio in the past 30 days;

11. Patients suffering from serious hemoptysis, hematemesis, vomiting, or moaning;

12. Those who are unable to take care of themselves during the trip without special assistance due to a physical or medical condition (such as a neurological or mental condition);

13. Sick passengers whose health condition suddenly deteriorates during check-in or while boarding;

14. Other patients suffering from diseases that make it inappropriate for them to travel by plane.

IX. Reminders:

1. Passengers who need to use medical oxygen devices during the flight are asked to submit their request 48 hours before the flight is scheduled to depart and see to the related fees (refer to Information for Passengers Requiring Oxygen)
2. Passengers with a mental illness must be accompanied by another adult when taking a flight.
3. Oxygen and pressure in high-altitude environments differ from those at ground level. Air travel may cause complications such as wound dehiscence, bleeding, and infection and increase the risk of postoperative diseases if people have recently undergone plastic surgery, plastic surgery, or other medical cosmetic surgery. For your safety in flight, please provide a medical certificate when checking in proving that you are fit to fly and a medical record indicating the date of surgery.
4. China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines will confirm the application for the flight departure date and contact the applicant (09:00-19:00). Please keep your phone available after making the application. We will reach out to you as soon as possible. If you do not receive a confirmation call or text message from China Eastern Airlines within 4 hours of submitting your application (during working hours), it may indicate that your application failed to be submitted due to network errors or system delays. Please try again or call 95530.
5. Once your application has been submitted online, China Eastern Airlines will be deemed to have received it, though it will still be subject to approval. Your requested flight may be limited by capacity, lack of available seats, or insufficient airport support. In this case, we will contact you to provide you with other options for flight or date. The success of your application is subject to our final approval.
